Michał Nesterowicz has established himself as one of the leading Polish conductors on the international scene.He is acclaimed for the expressive intensity and stylistic clarity of his interpretations and for his precise yet flexible approach to shaping the orchestral sound.
He studied violin and conducting at the Academy of Music in Wrocław, graduating with honours from Marek Pijarowski’s conducting class, and continued his studies with Helmuth Rilling at the International Bach Academy in Kraków. He is particularly valued for his work in the 19th- and 20th-century symphonic repertoire and for his interpretations of Polish and Eastern European music.
His international career has brought him to many of Europe’s leading orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Münchner Philharmoniker, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, WDR Sinfonieorchester, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Gulbenkian Orchestra and Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg. Following his debut with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in 2014, he was immediately reinvited and has since returned on several occasions. He enjoys a close artistic relationship with the Residentie Orkest The Hague. Regular collaborations with leading orchestras across Asia include the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra and theKyoto Symphony Orchestra
Nesterowicz has held chief conductor, artistic director and principal guest conductor positions with orchestras including the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife, Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile, Gdańsk Philharmonic and Sinfonieorchester Basel. He is currently Principal Guest Conductor of the Arthur Rubinstein Philharmonic Orchestra in Łódź.
Recent and forthcoming highlights include debuts with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Nationaltheater Orchester Mannheim, Dutch Philharmonic Orchestra and Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, as well as engagements with the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Symphony Orchestra and Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.
In the 2026/27 season he also returns to the Stuttgart Philharmonic for a series of programmes, including a collaboration with Elisabeth Leonskaja and a performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.
Michał Nesterowicz won the Cadaqués Orchestra European Conducting Competition in 2008 and was also among the prizewinners of the 6th Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors in Katowice.
