Michal Nesterowicz
“Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra (…) was a thrilling listening experience – in an interpretation that impressively demonstrated Nesterowicz’s assured command of the score.” (The Guardian)
Michał Nesterowicz has established himself internationally as one of Poland’s leading conductors. His interpretations are distinguished by expressive intensity, stylistic clarity, and a precise yet flexible approach to orchestral sound. He studied violin and conducting at the Academy of Music in Wrocław and graduated with distinction from Marek Pijarowski’s conducting class. He subsequently continued his studies with Helmuth Rilling at the International Bach Academy in Kraków. Nesterowicz is particularly acclaimed for his interpretations of the symphonic repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as for his profound knowledge of Polish and Eastern European music.
Among the major European orchestras with which Nesterowicz has worked over the course of his international career are the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, WDR Symphony Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Gulbenkian Orchestra, and Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg. Following his debut with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in 2014, he was immediately re-invited and has returned several times since. He also works regularly with renowned orchestras in Asia, including the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, and Kyoto Symphony Orchestra.
Nesterowicz has served as Chief Conductor, Artistic Director, and Principal Guest Conductor with orchestras including the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife, Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile, Gdańsk Philharmonic, and Basel Symphony Orchestra. He is currently Principal Guest Conductor of the Arthur Rubinstein Philharmonic Orchestra in Łódź. Recent and forthcoming highlights include debuts with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, and Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, as well as return invitations to the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, and Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 2026/27 season, he returns to the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker for several programmes, including performances with Elisabeth Leonskaja as soloist and a performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.
In 2008, Michał Nesterowicz won the European Conducting Competition of the Orquesta de Cadaqués. He was also among the prizewinners of the 6th Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors in Katowice.
